Hughes became famous for a variety of roles; his most notable roles came after middle age, and he was often cast as a dithering authority figure or grandfatherly elder. On screen, he appeared in the film transcription of (1964), (1969) (the only X-rated film to win the ), and also appeared in such films as (1971) (1971), (1977), (1981), (1982), (1987), (1988) - the screen reprise of his most successful stage-role, and (1991). He also played the old man who gave a ride to Felix and Oscar on (1998) and was featured in (2000). Hughes appeared on TV in such series as , , and . In 1973, he had a notable recurring role on as a Roman Catholic priest, Father John Majeski, doing battle with , and won an Emmy for his portrayal of a senile judge on . He was the central character in three sitcoms: , which ran on CBS from 1975–77, where he played a physician; , in which he played , a magician mentoring a 20th-century teenager; and , co-starring , where he played the family patriarch (, playing his brother, and made guest appearances). Hughes sang on one episode. He made a memorable appearance as The King (with Jim Dale as The Duke) in the PBS mini-series . Hughes also made a number of recurring appearances on daytime dramas including and as well as a brief appearance in an early episode of . He also did voice-overs for TV commercials advertising cereal Stage productions - "Osgood Meeker" in the Broadway production of 's little-known play , directed by (this was Barnard Hughes' last stage role)
