Richter was born in as second of four children and was raised in , where he was elected Prom King. While attending , he played in several groups, including the , before catching his role on Late Night. Richter left his post at Late Night in 2000. His first major venture, 's critically acclaimed but little watched , was cancelled after just two short mid-season runs. His next Fox sitcom, , was panned by the critics and lasted only one season. He also appeared several episodes of the critically-acclaimed as himself, notably the episode where, in addition to himself, he appears as three of his identical quintuplet brothers (the fifth has his face blurred out because he "would not sign a release", a joke related to the faux-documentary style of the show). In the CBS series, , Richter guest starred as Stan the "Sad Dad." His most recent television role was in , which was co-written and executive produced by . He also appeared in a single episode as a family in the and provided his voice in an episode of 's . Richter is married to actress/writer (a veteran of , on which Richter twice made a cameo appearance) and they have two children, William and Mercy. When a woman comes to his office thinking he is the former owner of the office, she asks him to find her husband whom she thinks faked his death. He decides to pursue this job and become a Private Eye, rather than doing his current boring job. The series played on NBC, with all six episodes in the first season on NBC.com.
